Project Story

Closing the gap between people and place, Finding Brisbane is an exciting new project proposed for MoB exhibition “Making Place: 100 Views of Brisbane.” Our concept aims to put emergent narrative and audience at the forefront of the exhibition, adding depth to the museum’s storytelling. Scroll down to find out more.

Tasked by MoB to conceive of a project that creates “a layer of storytelling that connects people to place,” we set out to create an innovative concept that would fit their brief perfectly. Through our site visits, we realised that the museum lacked a way for visitors to directly engage with the exhibition. To turn this gap into a story-telling opportunity, we created Finding Brisbane.

At the centre of the Finding Brisbane project is The River: a large floor decal that wraps around the exhibition space. This “river” acts as a medium for the audience to interact with the museum space. As visitors enter, they will be given a pen and sticker sheets that have prompts on them. Attendees will then write answers to the prompts on the stickers and place them on the river. Through this, the river will document and display the experiences of visitors, allowing for emergent storytelling opportunities.

The river also acts as a wayfinding aid, guiding people into and around the exhibition space. We believe that our project will be particularly attractive to kids ages 6–12, as this demographic tends to enjoy hands-on interaction.

Not only do the stickers provide a fun way to interact with the exhibition, but they also make visitors reflect on their relationship with place. For instance, the “A Building No Longer Around…” prompt encourages visitors to discover the ways Brisbane has changed and connect the paintings with their contemporary experiences of place. Even the simplistic “best spot” prompt changes how attendees interact with the space. This happens because they can observe what parts of the exhibition draw the most attention, drawing them to or from popular locations.

We plan to market our exhibition primarily through social media, using platforms like Instagram to post regular advertisements. So far, our marketing approach has been minimalistic and sleek, but we are happy to adjust to meet the client's needs.

With help from MoB, we hope to implement this interactive experience as soon as possible.
